Forget sun, sea and sand this summer - think filmmaking, friends and fun!

For an unforgettable two weeks in August 2015, Young Film Academy will be turning a beautiful boarding school in the English countryside (one hour from London) into a state-of-the-art film studio for young filmmakers ages 10-13, 14-17.

Yep, that’s 2 whole weeks of non-stop filmmaking fun dedicated to living, eating, sleeping and breathing movies! Students will meet like-minded young filmmakers who are as crazy about movies as they are, and will fully immerse themselves in the art and magic of movie making.

Camp Overview

Students who apply for YFA Summer Camp will have the opportunity to run their own film sets, learning from professional YFA filmmakers in all aspects of filmmaking, from story development, shooting and production, right through to the all-important editing and post-production in iMovie and Final Cut Pro.
Students will work in teams to make showcase films which can be used to kick-start further filmmaking or add to their CV/portfolio for careers development. (Note: YFA Summer Camp is a great stepping stone for students aged 16-17 who are looking to build their CV/portfolio and would like to apply for YFA’s government-subsidised BFI Academy starting in October 2015.)

YFA Summer Camp culminates in a World Premiere Showcase Screening of all completed movies for friends and family on the final day of the course - on the big screen! There’ll be a packed house, behind-the-scenes special features telling the real story of how that movie got made(!), and we’re guessing some blooper reels too...

Drawing inspiration from the success of Young Film Academy’s BFI Film Academy, Summer Camp students will get the inside track to how the film industry really works, receiving in-depth masterclasses from representatives of some of the UK’s most prestigious film production, marketing and distribution companies. There’ll even be masterclasses on make-up special FX and film marketing using free social media tools to spread the word about your movie...

Students will have a chance to try different roles behind and in front of camera, mastering intermediate and advanced filmmaking techniques. Students will have access to professional grip equipment including jib arm, sliders, dolly and tracks and a fully lit green screen studio, as well as databases of Hollywood post-production sound and visual FX. Careers development advice surgeries will be available, offering practical next steps to aspiring young filmmakers looking to break in to the world of film and TV. Summer Camp students will work towards an Arts Award qualification, documenting their journey into filmmaking with a blog, which can be shared with friends and family to see the amazing things they’re up to!

YFA Summer Camp will be challenging and demands full commitment from students, often under time pressure. But there’ll be plenty of time to relax too - making new friends, learning new skills and creating unforgettable memories.

Pastoral Care and Activities

First class pastoral care is a top priority on YFA Summer Camp. The safety, care and well-being of students are our prime concern at all times, and YFA Summer Camp boasts a high staff-student ratio. When students aren’t on set, there’ll be oodles of optional great fun indoor and outdoor activities on offer for them to enjoy, including: swimming, squash, tennis, table tennis, gym, woodland walks, basketball, dance, drama, film screenings, quizzes, excursions, competitions, games and more...

Students will be assigned to different Houses, with groups designed to allow different ages to meet, mix and make friends. Houses compete against each other in a variety of fun evening activities including quizzes, competitions and optional sports tournaments.

As well as welcoming British students who live abroad, we accept a number of overseas students at Summer Camp. If overseas students are not native English speakers, they need to be functionally fluent (note: extra English language lessons can be arranged for overseas students - please enquire).
